Flooding along the Meramec River repeatedly overwhelmed Missouri American Water’s existing South Plant Intake Center, submerging pump motors and disrupting operations. To address the issue, Missouri American Water invested in a new pump station designed to keep critical equipment well above the 500-year flood level while continuing to supply raw water to the South Plant. The new intake structure rises 45 feet above grade and extends 45 feet below grade to maintain submerged intake screens. The facility houses six vertical turbine pumps and incorporates BILCO roof hatches and a floor door to provide safe, efficient access for maintenance and long-term operation.
“With the pulley system, we can winch them open and closed from floor level inside the pump station. This is very convenient and doesn’t require someone to get on the roof to open the hatch.”
