PVSC in northern New Jersey faced significant operational challenges due to aging infrastructure, particularly in its grit chambers. These chambers, crucial for collecting heavy inorganic solid, required frequent maintenance, but the existing metal grating system was cumbersome and posed safety risks. Workers had to manually remove and reinstall heavy grates to access the chambers, which was inefficient and physically demanding. In collaboration with BR Welding and BILCO, PVSC replaced the old grating with 14 BILCO floor access doors. The doors were specifically chosen for their durability, ease of use and ability to improve operational efficiency. The new doors, featuring Type 316L stainless steel hardware and AASHTO H-20 wheel loading, significantly streamlined access to the grit chambers. With engineered lift assistance for one-handed operation, the doors enhanced worker safety by reducing manual handling of heavy grates.
“There were multiple panels that the workers had to lift out to allow the clamshell operators to access the chamber. Now they just pop the doors open. The difference is like night and day.”
