South Carolina Community’s ‘Big Dig’ Includes BILCO’s Access Doors

Project Snapshot

  • The $46 million Reedy River Basin Sewer Tunnel in Greenville, S.C., is a critical wastewater infrastructure project designed to serve the fast-growing population.
  • The 1.3-mile sewer line reduces the risk of overflows and protects water quality in the region.

BILCO Products

  • BILCO provided 13 custom floor access doors, designed for easy access to vertical shafts, enabling workers to enter the tunnel or lower equipment for maintenance.
  • The durable, corrosion-resistant access doors are ideal for wastewater environments and are equipped with special features, including grating covers and safety accessories.

The Reedy River Basin Sewer Tunnel, a $46 million project completed by Renewable Water Resources (ReWa), addresses the growing wastewater needs of Greenville, S.C., as the city experiences rapid population expansion. The gravity-fed sewer tunnel, which spans 1.3 miles was constructed to relieve pressure on the aging sewer system that risked overflows in the downtown area. This underground tunnel provides the necessary infrastructure to support Greenville’s continued growth while safeguarding water quality and the environment.

BILCO’s custom floor access doors play a vital role in maintaining and operating the new tunnel system. These doors allow workers to safely descend into vertical shafts to access the tunnel for inspections and equipment handling. Designed to withstand corrosive environments, these durable and reliable access doors were selected for their ability to meet the demands of wastewater projects.

“We use those types of doors fairly often on our projects, especially at pump stations. We find they have good durability and reliability.”
