New Lift Station in Florida Solves Community’s Wastewater Woes

Project Snapshot

  • Lift Station 87 in Sarasota, Florida, is designed to help manage 33% of the city’s wastewater flow while being resilient to Category 3 storm surges.
  • The project involved replacing an aging lift station, enhancing infrastructure with new sewer lines, improved water mains, and an environmentally source of irrigation water.

BILCO Products

  • BILCO provided 15 floor doors for the lift station, constructed with a channel frame for H-20 loading, designed to withstand the weight of heavy equipment vehicles.
  • The aluminum doors were customized in various sizes to facilitate access to vaults, pipes and pumps in the wet well, ensuring long-lasting performance against corrosive elements.

The construction of Lift Station 87 represents a significant advancement in Sarasota’s wastewater management, replacing an outdated facility that struggled with mechanical failures. Designed to withstand the harsh impacts of hurricanes, this above-ground structure was strategically built to ensure operational continuity for critical facilities like Sarasota Memorial Hospital during storms.

BILCO played a vital role in the lift station’s development by supplying specialized floor doors that meet the demanding requirements of the project. The successful implementation of these features ensures that the lift station will effectively serve the community while withstanding future environmental challenges.

“BILCO was selected because they had the capacity to make very large hatches. Competitors had difficulty building the sizes we needed and meeting the loading requirements. The ability to make them that large and meet those requirements was essential. They were prepared because they build doors like this frequently and they know how to do it.”
